Microsoft Is Retiring Immersive Events and Avatars in Teams. What Now?

October 16, 2026
by Andreas Reimer

Microsoft is retiring Immersive Events and Avatars in Teams. The official date is April 2, 2027, as stated in Microsoft’s own documentation, Plan for immersive events in Teams on Microsoft Learn.

After Microsoft Mesh was shut down in December 2025, Immersive Events was meant to be the replacement. Now that is going too, and Microsoft has not named a successor.

For every organization that built trainings, onboardings or events in 3D, this means one thing: an alternative needs to be in place by April 2027.

What Microsoft is retiring

  • Immersive Events in Teams – the 3D event format that took over from Microsoft Mesh.
  • Avatars in Teams – the avatar layer used in meetings and immersive spaces.
  • Retirement date: April 2, 2027 – source: Microsoft Learn.

Custom 3D environments, Unity-based content and the event formats teams have built around them will need a new home before that date.

We see it differently

Immersive collaboration is not a side project for us. It is all we do. Thanks to our wonderful enterprise customers, we keep expanding RAUM and steadily growing our market share.

RAUM runs on Meta Quest, Apple Vision Pro, Pico and in the browser, and it is built for enterprise in Cologne, Germany. If you want the side-by-side view, see RAUM vs. Microsoft Mesh and RAUM vs. Microsoft Teams.

Our offer: your content moves with you

For existing and new customers on the RAUM Enterprise License, we transfer your Unity projects and 3D assets for free. The environments, trainings and event spaces you invested in do not have to be thrown away with the platform.

What comes next: AI with spatial understanding

The next step is already here. With AI that now has spatial understanding, content like trainings, challenges and team building experiences can be generated in a fraction of the time and budget. We will cover this in more detail in an upcoming post.

How to prepare before April 2027

  • List your scenarios. Which trainings, onboardings and events currently run in Immersive Events or Mesh?
  • Secure your assets. Collect your Unity projects and 3D files while you still have full access.
  • Run a pilot early. Move one recurring format first, for example an enterprise VR training or a client event in VR.
  • Plan the rollout. Give your teams time to get used to the new platform before the retirement date.
